The LM Project Design Competition (terminated)
CPH City and Port Development and ATP Ejendomme has invited six architectual companies for a competition for the design of a new building complex on the Copenhagen waterfront.
The competition is both a design competition for the design of commercial properties and an ideas competition for the landscaping of adjacent urban spaces.
The design competition concerns the actual building design of a 50-60,000 m2 multi-user office building, comprising two high-rise buildings connected by a pedestrian bridge across the harbour basin. This part of the competition is described in the competition brief which can be downloaded from this page.
In the ideas competition, entrants are requested to submit proposals for the layout and organisation of surrounding outdoor areas, including the tip of Langeliniemolen (Langelinie Pier) and the tip of Marmormolen (Marble Pier). This part is also described in the competition brief.
The competition is organised as a restricted competition with six participants in accordance with Council Directive 2004/18/EC (Public Sector Procurement Directive).
The purpose of the competition is to obtain motivated and relevant proposals for a cohesive iconic building complex at the southeastern end of Marmormolen and the northwestern tip of Langeliniemolen. Marmormolen will thus be connected to Langeliniemolen at Kalkbrænderihavnsgade via both a building and a bridge.
The competition is also a unique opportunity to create new urban spaces for the benefit of the urban fabric of Copenhagen.
The Vision: An iconic landmark
The purpose of the competition is to provide a basis for a building complex that will be an iconic landmark at this prominent site in the city and will highlight Copenhagen’s profile as an international metropolis characterised by a high quality of life and high environmental standards – in other words a beacon in the development of the harbour area as a whole.
The development of the area should be rooted in the locality, the place and its potential and qualities, and the unique location.
CPH City & Port Development and ATP Ejendomme expect entries to present an architectural vision that uniquely demonstrates an understanding of the special physical location close to the water in the Port of Copenhagen as well as a brilliant overall concept for the site and a proposal for ’green’ office buildings of the future. The buildings should connect Marmormolen with Langeliniemolen by means of a compelling, imposing and publicly accessible bridge elevated at least 65 metres above sea level. Because of the building complex’s unique location on the waterfront, it should be possible to see the buildings from much of Copenhagen, for which reason their aesthetic qualities should be obvious.
The proposed schemes must be based on sustainable design, which means that the competition result must clearly show how sustainable concepts should be applied in subsequent design and planning phases.
Against the background of these visions, CPH City & Port Development and ATP Ejendomme wish to emphasise that buildings should be flexible and robust so that they will be able to accommodate a multitude of tenants. They should also be a financially sound investment, which means that proposed schemes must stay within the budgetary framework set out in the competition material.
